Land of the Gadigal and Birrabirragal People of the Eora Nation

Perched on a cliff overlooking Sydney Harbour, this inter-war Mediterranean residence offered a rare opportunity to expand and restore a storied home without altering its street presence. Three new levels were carved into the rock beneath the house, hidden from view, allowing the familiar silhouette to remain while creating a sequence of spaces anchored deep within the site.

Although not heritage listed, the renovation followed the discipline of a conservation project. Original doors, skirtings, cornices, architraves and plaster sconces were restored or carefully replicated. Each new intervention continues the home’s language, complementing rather than competing.

At the lowest level, a stone-clad gallery leads to an underground pool reminiscent of a Roman bath. Soft arches, pale-green marble and limestone chequered floors create a timeless atmosphere, with each piece precisely stencilled, cut and numbered in Italy.

Aged French oak herringbone floors run throughout, bringing warmth against marble mosaics and classical plasterwork. The kitchen balances refinement and nostalgia, while the main bedroom forms a darkened sanctuary for rest. Over five years, the project evolved through patience and collaboration, honouring the character of this remarkable harbour home.
